Cover - Bill Brakman of Lake Forest, CA did all metal work himself on this wild creation. Bill has a career as a body man and took some courses in metal sculpting. This was his first attempt at metal sculpting or forming metal with a motorcycle and he decided to do it up in a huge way by creating this head-turning custom bike. He had it on display at the 19th annual Los Angeles Calendar Motorcycle Show held Sunday, July 18th at Queen Mary Event Park, Long Beach, CA.

Shinya Kimura and his companion Ayu pose with his latest build, a Ducati999R  outside his shop, Chabott Engineering, in Azusa, CA.. This custom Ducati is named the Edge and features hand-made and riveted metal bodywork with the exhaust integrated into the tailpiece. Shinya is responsible for founding Zero Engineering and Chabott Engineering. His motorcycles are considered works of art and his talent as a builder has him way ahead of the curve. His metal workmanship and attention to detail are unbelievable and further remarkable by the fact he does it all with vintage tools and his two hands.

Front Cover: “SOMETHING DIFFERENT” - That’s what Bruce McGregor said when asked why he built a supercharged Norton Commando to use as his regular “ride”. Starting with a 1973 Commando, he added the rear section from a 1975 model then installed a Drouin supercharger along with and Elektron carburetor. Needless to say, low compression pistons were required when the supercharger was added. Bruce has owned it for 6 years doing a restoration and the mechanical work in that time. When asked about the bike’s performance, he wouldn’t mention any speeds achieved, only stating that 3rd and 4th gears are “really scary”!!! Bruce rode the “Super” Commando back home to Wakefield, RI with the awards for Most Technical Interest, Best Motorcycle 1950 to 1983 and Best Custom Norton…….not a bad day at all for Bruce!!

Front Cover: Left-right: Tom Reisner and Shawn Farnsworth – The highlight of the year was watching Shawn Farnsworth whack the throttle after landing off the second jump during a New England hillclimbing event and stand the Reisner built XR750 straight up! You could see Shawn back out and actually pull himself upward with the bike straight up in the air and get the front end back down! That’s all instinct and reflexes. This bike has two engine speeds, 2000rpm and 12,000rpm! And it takes less than the blink of an eye to get there. The reaction time it must take to hang onto to the bike has to be incredible. Shawn Farnsworth did go on to take the win making it his second in just his rookie season.
